Made in France Designer Profile: Sybilla was born in New York in 1963. In 1983 she opened a workshop in Madrid for tailor-made fashion and presented her first collection in public. Two years later she started to sell her collections, following her first appearance at Barcelona's Gaudí Fashion Show. In 1987 she signed a contract with the Italian company Gibó, which marked the start of her international career. Since then she has regularly presented her designs on the catwalks of Milan, Paris, New York and Tokyo. She has also launched her collections of footwear, bags, knitwear and bed linen on the international scene. In 1989 she began to work in collaboration with the Japanese company Itokin, which is responsible for commercialising her brand name in Japan. That same year saw the opening of her Tokyo store, together with 20 corners in the country's leading department stores. She also presented her range of accessories, including umbrellas, hats, scarves, glasses and fashion jewellery, and in 1993 she launched a younger line, called Jocomomola. Sybilla took some time off from the international fashion scene following the birth of her two children, although she continued to take part in the occasional project, such as designing the costumes for Blanca Li's ballets or the design of a rucksack for Louis Vuitton. From 1996 onwards, a long-standing project, Sybilla Casa - Sybilla's home decoration line - begins to take shape: candles, lamps, silverware, rugs, etc., all designed by Sybilla start to appear on the market. In 1998 she launched her range of bridal and evening wear. Sybilla Noche, the evening wear line, received a rapturous welcome when it was presented in Paris in March 2000, marking the start of the international distribution of this line. That same year Sybilla moved to new central offices in Madrid. The first sections dedicated exclusively to Sybilla Casa opened in Sybilla's Madrid store in 2001, together with a department for made to measure designs. The first Jocomomola store also opened in Madrid. In 2002 she signed a contract with the Italian firm Pier, for the production and worldwide distribution of the Sybilla collections. The designer has recently launched a jewellery line in the unmistakeable style of her simple, pure and delicate creations. The Sybilla style is timeless and universal. Now one of Japan’s most admired designers, she is about to extend her sales network in Europe and in March 2007 will present her ready-to-wear collection at Paris Fashion Week.
